Light Touch

A collaboration with Neal Feay for the Blond design Laboratory group show in MDW 2024.

The participants were asked by London based design agency Blond to respond to an object from their collection of everyday items with interesting manufacturing methods.

My object was a bamboo ladle with a handle that intersects the cup at the end.

Its balance and precision led to the development of an optical turntable that seeks to express the same delicate feeling.

An optical turntable uses light rather than a needle to read the groves on a vinyl so this project was also a chance to explore a familiar typology within the frame of a new technology.

The piece was precision machined and anodised in house by Alex Rasmusen at Neal Feay. Alex brought expertise to its forms and details that are informed by the machining process much as the ladle was design was informed by its material.
