Ernest Extendable Table - Muuto
A extendable solid oak dining table in two lengths.
This project started with an exploration of the structure. I wanted to develop a table that had the solid stability expected from a wooden table but with a fresh visual lightness.
Taking inspiration from the underside of bridges, an arched connection between legs and underside provides a point of critical strength to the structure that also became its signature visual detail.
The delicacy achieved in the legs is carried through to the solid wood top that has a large reverse chamfer on the underside to present a thin edge along the long sides while the short sides reveal the true thickness of the solid top with an architectural profile.
A custom extending mechanism was developed that uses the same material as the table. Two pull out aprons at each end support and provide through the natural flexibility of the oak a simple clip-in mechanism to retain the extension leafs.
