Billet Chair - Hydro
A recycled aluminium chair formed from extruded profiles.
Part of a Shaped by Hydro group project for MDW 2024 to promote the first 100% post consumer recycled aluminum called 100R
Developed over an intense three month period this project sought to push extrusions to their limit. Using only two 200mm dies we formed the structure from one and the seat and back from another.
The structure required a profile to be partially separated to form the legs and back support which are bent in different directions but remain connected as the unseparated profile below the seat. This partial separation allowed a complex structural part to be formed as a single part free from fixings and other points of possible failure.
This structural part has openings cut partially through that allow the second profile to clip in and form both the back and seat using the same profile that is flipped to make the 200mm profile form a 400mm width seat.
This mechanical connection between the two profiles allowed the chair to be completely made from aluminum with no adhesives or fixings. Ensuring that end of life recycling is easy.
All finishes were anodised.
The project was headed up by Asle Forsback at Hydro with the designer Lars Fjetland art directing and curating the selected designers and their projects. All engineering was done by Anders Helander at Hydro.
